White Wines: Beyond Grapes
In recent times, white wines have experienced a remarkable advance in their presence on the shelves and tables of Argentina. This phenomenon is mainly due to the increasing quality of these wines. However, it also corresponds to the change of perception on the part of consumers, who have begun to appreciate the breadth and intriguing diversity that defines this universe.
This distinction between white wines is based on two interrelated aspects that define these beverages: firstly, the structure, mouthfeel and the body; and secondly, the grape variety used in their production. Although in the past white wines were often associated with casual, light and smooth examples, recently full-bodied whites have emerged as a style that has gained prominence and captivated consumers.
These wines stand out for giving a predominant role to fruit over acidity. These are no longer simply lightweight whites— now, they exhibit greater body and structure, they are less sharp and more serious, full-bodied and complex. They are generally made from varieties such as Chardonnay, Viognier or by blending various white grape varieties, sometimes partially aged in oak barrels.
Round, full-bodied Chardonnays, such as Luigi Bosca Chardonnay, a wine that balances freshness and fluidity with body and unctuousness on the palate, supported by fruit and with a distinctive character.
These wines do not belong to the young and fresh white segment that used to dominate the summer scene, but neither are they the round and unctuous wines with long barrel ageing that are enjoyed in winter. They are the ideal choice to accompany seasonal dishes such as warm salads with cooked vegetables, grilled blue fish, fried seafood, paellas and seafood rice dishes.
Some of the most outstanding representatives of the full-bodied white style include:
– Round, full-bodied Chardonnays, such as Luigi Bosca Chardonnay, a wine that balances freshness and fluidity with body and unctuousness on the palate, supported by fruit and with a distinctive character.
– Lively and complex Riesling, such as the Luigi Bosca Riesling, a pioneer among Argentine varietals with expressive aromas evoking tropical fruits, some mineral notes, good body and a well-defined personality.
– More stately blends, such as the De Sangre White Blend (a blend of Chardonnay, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc). With an expressive and distinctly fruity nose, an unctuous and vibrant texture, this wine is delicate and elegant.
